Review: 2017 Salomon Speedspike CS

By | 2018-03-15T04:21:42+00:00 March 15th, 2018|Gear Review, Shoes|

2017 Salomon Speed Spike CS Shoe Type: Studded Winter Trail Weight: 305g Drop: 6mm Stack: 24mm Heel, 18mm Forefoot MSRP: $170 Here in Vermont maintaining mileage throughout the winter months can be challenging. We're located such that we receive systems of brutally cold air that sweep down from Canada, and warm/wet systems that curl up from the Gulf. One day it might be -8°F with -30°F windchill, then flip to 61°F and raining, then immediately swing back to 4°F and sunny! Because of these extreme swings in temperature and the associated variable precipitation, our road surfaces and trails are constantly changing. From one run to the next you could encounter packed snow, then slush, followed by water ice. When I first started winter running I used whatever trail shoe [...]

First Look: 2018 Salomon S/Lab Ultra Review… aka S/Lab Sense Ultra 2 Review

By | 2018-03-15T04:07:09+00:00 March 1st, 2018|First Look, Gear Review, Shoes|

2018 Salomon S/Lab Ultra (S/Lab Sense Ultra 2) Update 3/14/18: Road Trail Run just published a piece written by Estelle-Marie Kieffer sharing her initial impressions of the 2018 S/Lab Ultra. She too isn't feeling the new design and had issues with comfort. Also, her impression was that V2 fits shorter and narrower than V1. That goes against my feelings after comparing a brand new V1 against the brand new V2. Partly what I think in happening is that the new sensifit wings just aren't as accommodating as the old version. V1's upper was more uniform, less rigid, and distributed pressure better. V2's upper, because of the wings, is less uniform and ends up focusing pressure on a couple of small areas. Anyway... for less of [...]

Review: 2018 Skechers GoRun 6

By | 2018-02-12T05:40:38+00:00 February 12th, 2018|Gear Review, Shoes|

2018 Sketchers GoRun 6 Shoe Type: Road shoe - Neutral Trainer Weight: 6.7 oz Drop: 4mm Stack: 20 mm (Heel), 16 mm (Forefoot) MSRP: $100 Like many runners out there, there is a lot about Skechers producing performance running shoes that seems a bit off. Being an 80's baby, I remember Skechers as the skate shoe, goofy platform shoe company that became really obnoxious with the advent of the Shape-ups. But here I am, writing a review about a Skechers Performance running shoe, and I can tell you unequivocally, "I like this shoe!". Now there are certainly things that I think can improve. Its by no means my favorite shoe out there, but the GoRun 6 is a lightweight, comfortable, fast feeling shoe that is certainly on my [...]

It comes hot on the heals of the S-Lab Sense Ultra which has been one Salomon's most popular and well received shoes in some time. We reviewed it here and think it's one of our favorite trail running shoes of all time. So, how does that Sense Ride hold up? Does it really provide S-lab performance at quality at a lower more reasonable price? The Quick Version When we first learned about the Sense Ride we were super excited. It sounded like a great shoe with great features that [...]
