1. Tell us about your event. What is it? What makes it special?
The Middlebury Area Land Trust started building the now 19-mile Trail Around Middlebury (TAM) in 1989. At present it encircles the village of Middlebury, traveling through Cornwall, Weybridge, and New Haven. It links nearly 1,000 acres of public and conserved lands. The trail traverses Chipman Hill with vistas of the Green Mountains and Adirondacks, local farmlands, old-growth forests along Otter Creek, the stunning Gorge at Belden Falls, and many bucolic Vermont scenes.  It really captures the character of Vermont landscapes and takes place in the fall, just in time for the first turning of the leaves!
2. What’s the purpose of the event? Is it a for-profit venture, is there a charitable component, something else?
The TAM Trek is a trail race and fun run to support the Trail Around Middlebury (TAM). The Middlebury Area Land Trust (MALT) estimates the TAM and connecting trails cost ~$15,000/year to maintain. As a non-profit, MALT accomplishes this with volunteers and donations from the community. The TAM Trek is the most significant fundraiser for the TAM.
3. So tell a little more about the race? How does it work? Who is it for?
There’s something for everyone. Participants can choose the full 19-mile loop, the 10K on a lollipop loop through Wright Park and Otter Creek Gorge, or the family-friendly 2-mile fun run. All three races are on trail and include aid stations, excellent raffle prizes, and an after party with American Flatbread.
4. Any tips, tricks, or suggestions that might help ensure a successful race?
Practice running up and down some farm stiles, you’ll be crossing at least 3!  We also encourage learning the “waddle walk” for traversing both suspension bridges over Otter Creek. They’re super awkward to run across because of the swaying, so the locals have developed a special technique.  Finally, don’t forget to look up, you won’t want to miss the scenery of this race.
5. Where can one go to learn more and to sign up?
Visit our race website: http://www.maltvt.org/tam-trek/ Registration fees go up on July 4, so register soon! The 2018 TAM Trek will take place on Sunday, September 16th.
